Neil Walker answers:

Your about right. However some tiddlers are quoted at fractions of a penny. All the prices are in pence, as you say. It doesnn’t mean they are necessarily cheap!
The spread on a stock quote of 1p-1.5p is 50%!!

Laura Your questions about hsbc share price

Laura asks…

FT100 bank shares look on the floor,is this the time to jump in? and would HSBC be a good punt?

With Barclays, lloyds, and Hsbc due to report huge profits for 2010 could this be the turning point on the banks share prices? my gut feeling is these current prices will not hold for much longer,is now the right time to get back in

me125x125 cropped Your questions about hsbc share price

Neil Walker answers:

Great question. I have considered this myself, although I haven’t actually researched fully.

Looking at HSBC we can expect a massive rise in profits, but even with this rise we are still expecting the EPS to be about half of its 2007 level. At current levels of earnings the stock looks expensive, but if HSBC will return to 2007 levels within the next 3-5 years it would appear to be cheap.

The main question is: will HSBC return to 2007 levels of profit? To answer this you have to understand what caused the profits to fall (which I don’t fully). Do as much reading as you can from the annual reports and news articles to look for the answers.

We should also consider whether there are any more shocks in store for banking stocks – like the threat of increased regulation which is often talked about.

When I do a full analysis of this I will post it on my website – but it is unlikely to be any time soon!
