Economic Crisis
The cat’s out of the bag, I know I’m not telling any secrets here. We are in the midst of a severe and global economic crisis. The media pats us on the back and suggests we simply keep spending while we’re left trying to figure out the difference between recession vs depression and what that means for our family’s security. Keep reading and I’ll explain more.
The Difference
An economic recession is generally measured by a country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) which provides indices for the overall economic growth of that country. During a recession, business activity slows including production, jobs creation and investment. In general a recession can be defined as a slow but damaging decline in the business activity across the entire economy that lasts for more than a few months.
An economic depression carries with it all of the same indices of a recession but to a much greater degree. One unofficial measurement of a depression is that the GDP falls by more than 10 percent over a period longer than three years. Keep in mind that these numbers are often manipulated, often quite blatantly, to avoid telling the true story.
While each of these crises are measured by marked increases in unemployment rates, underemployment rates, bankruptcies and foreclosures the complete economic failure with both seems to blur the lines between recession vs depression.
