Chris Your questions about earn cash at home moms

Chris asks…

How can a stay at home mom earn a little extra cash on a semi regular basis?

Please don’t say get a job I live in a really small town it’s near impossible to find a job thanks in advance for suggestions.

Neil Walker answers:

I live in a small town so I know what you mean, Trish!

There really are a lot of opportunities available once you start to look for them. Part of deciding what to do to earn extra cash depends on what you’re interested in. For example if you like to write, providing SEO articles might be a possibility. If you enjoy crafts, maybe you can do something along those lines.

A quick, easy way to make a few quick dollars might be to sell excess things you have around the house on eBay. Take a look on eBay to see how similar items are listed and what they’re selling for. Then you can sell similar items. Once you get the hang of eBay, you can sell your own items (such as crafts you make) or items you pick up locally from yard sales and similar. There’s some great advice for getting started on eBay at http://www.easy-ebay.com

Another approach would be to check out books on Amazon. Go to Amazon.com and search for books on “part-time income opportunities” or “part-time businesses” or “spare time income”. Amazon let’s you search the table of contents and index of the books so you’ll be able to find a whole list of extra cash generators (and probably many that you never thought of). If you find a book that looks particularly helpful, you can buy it or borrow it from your library.

These are a few thoughts to get you started. I wish you good luck and would be happy to hear what you decide on.

Helen Your questions about earn cash at home moms

Helen asks…

As a stay at home mom how can I earn some cash?

I stay at home with my 6 month old son. I am looking for a way to earn a little extra cash for spending money. In February I will start nannying, but if there is something I can do on top of that. Neil Walker answers:

Networking through Mom’s groups, church and other women in business. I have my own business with Mary Kay and I have something I call a book of business where I hand out business cards of other businesses and they let me leave my information in there business or hand out my cards. Hang something in the local supper market, go to the local library story time and meet other moms see if you can hang something there . Hope this helps. Wishing you much success:)

Mark Your questions about earn cash at home moms

Mark asks…

Stay at home moms, what do you do to earn extra cash?

I’d love to stay home once our little girl arrives. Our son is almost 6 and I feel as if I don’t spend enough time with him and I’ve missed out on so much since I’ve been employed full-time since he was 8mths old. Any ideas? Thanks.

me125x125 cropped Your questions about earn cash at home moms

Neil Walker answers:

Have you considered babysitting? If your son has some little chums from class who’s mom’s are looking for daycare, you could do some sitting before and after school and have the day time in between to spend with the new baby. I actually know a few moms who are making pretty good money with this….$500-$900 per week. You can also write off a percentage of toys, cleaning supplies etc etc etc if you want to treat it as a proper business but you’d have to check the tax laws where you live. I always found my sitters by going to the office at the school. They always know the moms in the neighbourhood who sit so if you let them know I’m sure they’d have some clients for you in no time.

My husban and I have a lot of things around the house that we would like to get rid of. We think that we can make money selling it on the internet what do you think and how dose one go about doing it? Can anyone help us?

me125x125 cropped Your questions about how to make money selling on ebay

Neil Walker answers:

Your first stop should be eBay’s Guide to Seller Services http://pages.ebay.com/help/sell/services.html

eBay’s Seller Central has all the resources you need to learn about the basics of selling on eBay http://pages.ebay.com/sellercentral/index.html

The key to a successful eBay selling is simple — Sell products that people actually want.

Selling on eBay is not as easy as some portray. In fact, go to eBay and check out the number of auctions that end without a single bid. Competition is getting tough, as more sellers go to eBay; even the big boys are joining in the eBay marketplace. Add to that the increasing listing and final value fees.

Buying from garage sales and selling on eBay is fun, and good getting a few dollars here and there from ebay. Sometimes, you luck out on an item and hit big, but many times it will just be so-so (assuming you can even get the price you paid for it). In terms of fun factor, it is great. But from a business stand-point, it is not. Not sustainable.

If you want to earn serious money from eBay, you need to have a well-thought out business model. Selling on ebay is getting tougher — just look at the number of auctions that closes without a bid. Go to the boards on ebay and you will hear even oldtimers complaining about how stiffer competition plus higher fees make it so much harder to sell on ebay.

One success model of ebay is the couple Jay and Marie Senese (username jayandmarie) of the 1-cent CD fame. They have the highest positive feedback number of all sellers on eBay. Their business model is to buy very low cost CDs in bulk (those that CD stores sell in their discount bins) and offer them on ebay at a starting price of 1 cent http://www.businessweek.com/magazine/content/04_23/b3886080.htm Their success is based on the fact that they stumbled on a sustainable business model with products that people really want. They sold their business — where else but on ebay — for $5 million! Now that is success.

eBay has several ways for you to determine exactly what the hot items to sell on their marketplace:

Items In Demand = the most popular items currently within that particular category. To see the In Demand page, go to http://pages.ebay.com/sellercentral/sellbycategory.html

Hot Items by Category Report = a monthly report that lists the fastest growing categories on eBay for the previous month. Go to http://pages.ebay.com/sellercentral/whatshot.html and select “Hot Items by Category” from the menu on the left.

eBay Pulse = “a daily snapshot of current trends, hot picks, and cool stuff on eBay”. Go to http://pulse.ebay.com/ to see eBay Pulse in action.

Merchandising Calendar = eBay promotes specific categories on its home page each month. Savvy eBayers know that this home page exposure results in more interest in such categories. Go to http://pages.ebay.com/sellercentral/calendar.html to view the current Merchandising Calendar.

George Your questions about how to make money selling on ebay

George asks…

With Shipping Charges So High, How Do You Make Money Selling On Ebay?

Seems like with ebay‘s fees on top of shipping, it’s hard to get a good deal (isn’t that what ebay was about? Sort of?)
and even harder to make anything selling stuff.
Is there some way to do it I just don’t know about?

me125x125 cropped Your questions about how to make money selling on ebay

Neil Walker answers:

Since the buyer usually pays the shipping, the seller is not impacted by the shipping costs. Buyers wouldn’t really buy if the all in costs were higher than what you could get down the street. Its also a way to get stuff that you can not find locally. People are really successful selling stuff, but you have to own it at the right peice since ebay is an active price discovery system tb.

Thomas Your questions about how to make money selling on ebay

Thomas asks…

How do people make money selling stuff on ebay so cheap, Where do they get thier inventory cheaper than ebay?

Im trying to open an ebay store as a side job, but everything i find to sell is already so cheap that i cant make even a dollars profit on anything. Is it because people buy in bulk or have deals with the manufacturers or what? how is anyone makeing money on ebay?

me125x125 cropped Your questions about how to make money selling on ebay

Neil Walker answers:

While many ebay sellers simply buy lots from ebay to resell or from estate sales, others have manufacturers and suppliers that gives them very low prices and they can afford to mark up their prices pretty well.

For the last four years, I’ve been selling pearls on ebay, among other things. For my pearl products, I source them from the Philippines and I have suppliers. I can get freshwater pearls 6 mm size for only 20 pesos – that’s like $0.40. I start bidding at $20, sometimes less — my base price alone gives me a huge profit margin. Same with Akoya and South Sea pearls – high quality pearls that I sell starting at $199, I only pay a fraction of its price including shipping.

Or batik wall hangings from Indonesia or Thailand that I can get from my suppliers for only $0.50 or less and resell for $9.99.

So I don’t rely on deals that you can see on estate auctions once in a while as I have a steady supply of cheap products that I can resell.

Sharon Your questions about how to make money selling on ebay

Sharon asks…

Given the cost of an Ebay ad, how do people make money selling things?

It seems hard to make money selling items on Ebay when the ad is expensive in itself.

me125x125 cropped Your questions about how to make money selling on ebay

Neil Walker answers:

I pay a bit more than the 35 cent insertion fee, like the gallery picture and supersized pitcures, but it’s usually less than $2.00 to list things. I agree with the person that said you have to know how to list things- put some general terms in the title along with the exact item you’re selling, so that people searching for “fine china” will also find your “Rosenthal Ivory Soup Bowl”

me125x125 cropped Your questions about work from home data entry

Neil Walker answers:

Medical transcriptionist. Litsen to tapes of dictated medical charts and type them up using the software the company provides you with.
Also, I sell items on EBay and on a local auction site. Most of my items comes from yards sales, flea markets, discount bins at local stores, etc. I sell larger items locally, less shipping charges etc. Most customers will gladly pick up the items. Sometimes I buy items from the local site just to sell on EBay. You can get the same type of information that some people offer for sale just by checking out the Ebay site for free!

For someone who is just starting out in the online auction world, taking a look at sites like eBay and others can seem intimidating. Forget about the bidding process, just trying to absorb all the information can be a challenge.

Online auction sites can be an exhilarating rush or a huge disappointment. Sometimes you can see great savings emerge from a well placed bid, and other times you are aghast at the cost of shipping and packaging.

The old saying about the buyer beware definitely applies to eBay. Do your research and look around the site before you do anything. Get familiar with how the system works, what the average price for items are, and how you can tell details about the seller’s track record. The more you are aware, the less you will mess up.

Sellers on eBay and other online auction sites are usually the ones that have to pay the service fees, which is normally a percentage of what the item sells for. Sometimes they will pass the cost on to you in terms of shipping charges. Don’t feel ripped off, they are just doing what they have to do to break even.

How do these sites make money? By charging the seller fees for their services. This can range from anywhere between three and twenty percent, depending. So, the buyer bears the upfront costs, in addition to whatever the ending bid will be verses what they were hoping for.

If you are a buyer, then these sites are pretty simple and easy to use. However, selling things takes a little more time and planning to get the ball rolling, including making a budget for the fees that need to be paid.

For sellers, there are also levels of features that sites will sell you in order to give you and your product the spread that you want. Look around and see if any of these will work for you.

Even with the fees, these sites provide a unique service that is easy to get in to, fun to use, and a great way to score some deals or get rid of something that you no longer have any use for. The fees are just part of the package.

You will get the most out of your experience as long as you stick to learning before you actually try. After that, feel free to jump in when you are comfortable and ready.
